5 things to know for Sunday’s final round

Only one round remains at the 2025 U.S. Open, with the contenders now whittled down to a select few at the top of the leaderboard. Sam Burns holds a one-shot lead over Adam Scott and J.J. Spaun, and there are only seven players within five shots of the lead.

What’s in store for Round 4? Here are five things to know for Sunday at Oakmont.

Sam Burns stayed in it

Burns has five PGA Tour wins on his resume, but he’s never been this close to contending in a major championship. In fact, Burns has only one top 10 in the majors in 20 previous appearances, and that was last year at Pinehurst, where he finished T9.

But a sizzling round of five-under 65 on Friday launched Burns into the conversation, and he hung in on Saturday, firing a gutsy 69 to keep himself in the lead.

Adam Scott’s major chance

It’s been more 12 years since Adam Scott’s major breakthrough at the 2013 Masters, and the 44-year-old is now in position to become the second-oldest winner of the U.S. Open.

Scott has been a world-class player for more than two decades, and has amassed 20 top 10s in major championships over the course of his career. Could this be the Aussie’s last best chance at major glory?

Can Scottie Scheffler still win?

After firing round of 73-71-70, Scheffler has never really been in the mix in this U.S. Open.

But at four over par, he’s T11 and eight shots back heading into the final round. Arnold Palmer holds the record for the biggest-ever comeback to win the U.S. Open after starting the final round seven shots back at Cherry Hills in 1960. A win from Scottie on Sunday would require an historic performance. But we’re never going to say never when it comes to the World No. 1.

Others in the mix

Only two major winners currently reside in the top 11 on the leaderboard: Scott (-3) and Scheffler (+4).

For everyone else, emerging victorious at this week’s challenge at Oakmont would mark their maiden major title.

Viktor Hovland is three shots back. J.J. Spaun is one shot back. Carlos Ortiz is four shots back, and Thriston Lawrence and Tyrrell Hatton are five shots back.

How to watch, weather forecast

The weather forecast will add to Oakmont’s difficulty on Sunday, as the threat of rain and thunderstorms will linger all afternoon. For the final groups, the wind may become a factor too, with gusts of up to 18 mph expected as the day goes on. Buckle up!
