As the golf season winds down, Arccos keeps me improving

I’ve spent another month with Arccos game-tracking but this time most of my rounds were spent testing out upcoming club releases. It’s interesting to see what happens to my game when I’m not using my normal set, not to mention the new feature (or possibly one that I missed previously) that I’d love to dive into.

I’m still using the Arccos Air and the Arccos Smart Laser every time I play (as long as the course is rated) and both devices have been nothing but flawless. Now that I’ve been using the system for a good bit of time, the accuracy continues to improve and I am essentially at a point where I don’t even touch my phone or the app during my round, and everything is logged, no problem. Let’s use my August golf recap to see 1) where we’re at, 2) what clubs could land in the bag, and 3) what I still need to work on.

I was able to play eight rounds in August, including a couple of very special rounds at Tobacco Road and Pinehurst No. 4. I also spent most of my time testing out new product that will be dropping soon. I added the Cleveland RTZ 2 wedges for a few rounds, which I admit mostly to help understand the following graphic better. I’ve also changed my goal in the app to be a +2 index to get a better idea at where I need to be to chase down one of my favorite golfing partners.

I wouldn’t say I am upset with the golf I played in August, but I sure did miss my gamer bag for most of the month. Toward the end, I started losing control of my actual gamers once I put them back in the bag, and with a tournament coming up at the end of September and not many opportunities to play this coming month, I’ve got the gamer 14 back in play. I badly need to lock in. The stats are a pretty direct reflection of trying to switch clubs around for six of the eight rounds I played, and honestly, there’s not much to complain about. That being said, there was a couple really cool insights to pull on.

Firstly, the things that I need to work on have pretty much remained the same. For whatever reason I am terrible with short shots from the rough, long lag putts, and I still have a tendency to take penalties with the driver. Even with my gamer driver. These feel like easy fixes, and I am going to spend some time this offseason on the short game, while trying to get the driver to figure itself out and be the hero I know it can become.

The first stat this month that got my gears turning is the mental game strokes gained tracking. I don’t know if this is a newly added feature or if I have completely missed it in previous updates, but it’s really cool. If you ask people who play with me what my worst quality is on the golf course, many would say I give up pretty easily. I’m a quickly defeated golfer. I could be two under through eight holes and then make a silly mistake on the 9th and there goes the round. Just ask my coach. That being said, according to the mental game strokes gained tracking… I’m actually not that bad!

Now for some comparisons. This month I tested a forthcoming driver and hit plenty of shots to see how it rated against my gamer, and the results were really interesting. I absolutely love the new club comparison feature within Arccos and I have big plans to include it in more Fully Equipped content moving forward. I still haven’t hit the driver on a launch monitor yet, but I’ve been impressed with the results and will share the experience once the driver actually launches. For now, here’s a tease at the performance comparison. Can you guess what the driver is and which is my gamer?

You can see above that I also spent the month hyper-tracking my PXG wedge usage. I wrote a long article about how I fell in love with these wedges, and now the proof is here. It’s really a night and day difference, particularly in the gap wedge loft that I have singled out in this comparison. My dispersion is tighter both in distance and from side to side. At this point my only worry is making sure I get a backup set as soon as I can so I can make sure that I won’t go without them!

The last thing I want to dive in on is what I consider an absolutely hilarious stat that has dumbfounded some recent caddies of mine. According to Arccos (and my scorecards) I am a better player out of the sand than I am from the rough on short shots. It makes no sense. The only thing that I can say is it appears that my bunker lesson with Megan Johnston continues to pay dividends!
