The PGA Tour’s first full-field event of the new season brings with it a host of players looking to get 2025 off to solid start.
While last week’s the Sentry had just 59 of the top players and winner’s from last season, the Sony Open has a full field of 144 players, many rookies just getting their PGA Tour career started.
And while this week doesn’t feature the $20 million mega purse of last week’s Signature Event, a high finish can still set the tone ahead of the PGA Tour’s trim down from 125 to 100 exempt players after this season.
And that’s key for someone like Hawaii local Chan Kim, a second-year Tour member who made the cut this week for the first time as a PGA Tour member.
“As the season opener, just to start off getting some points, that’s a really big boost in confidence,” the 15th-year pro said Saturday.
Kim finished in a tie for 53rd this week after a 68 Sunday which will net him around $20,000 when everything is finalized. Nothing crazy, but it starts his year off in the plus column as heads to the airport for a redeye to travel to next week’s American Express.
