How Each Senator Voted on the Spending Bill to Avert a Government Shutdown

The Senate voted 62 to 38 to advance a bill to fund the federal government through September and avoid a shutdown on Saturday. Senators will vote soon on final passage of the bill, which requires a simple majority and is expected to be approved.

All Republicans but one were joined by 10 Democrats in voting “yes” on the measure to overcome a filibuster and proceed to a vote on the final bill. It required 60 votes to pass.

On Wednesday, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, said that his party would oppose the G.O.P. bill, favoring a shorter extension of government funding to allow time to reach a bipartisan agreement. But in a reversal on Thursday, Mr. Schumer announced that he planned to vote to advance the legislation, saying that despite it being a “terrible option,” a shutdown would be “far worse.”

The spending bill passed the House along mostly party lines on Tuesday. Many Republicans who supported the bill and Democrats who opposed it provided the same reason: It would give the Trump administration wide discretion on how federal money is spent and provide flexibility to Elon Musk’s cost-cutting operation, the Department of Government Efficiency.
