8:30pm Avinash: “Please tell us when we will start losing overs and at what rate we loose it” — Still waiting for an official word, but we should start losing overs by around 8:40pm local time. Don’t think we are getting a full 40-over game in tonight because it continues to rain. For those asking, 10:50pm local time (two hours and 20 minutes from now) is the cut-off time for a five-overs-each match to start.
8:14pm Nothing new to report, which means that it is still raining at the ground. Having said that, the intensity may just have reduced, but again, that might be clutching at straws slightly.
Akshay: “Possibility of a full game looks bleak with rain continuing for another hour or so. I was so excited to see the contest between Bumrah and Suryavanshi. Hopefully i get to see the trailer before the full movie on May 24 at Wankhede.”
7:58pm Persistent rain still in Guwahati. Looks like one of those days.
SamirD: “Intense rains in Guwahati and the ground’s gone quiet… but every cricket fan knows this silence is just the calm before the roar. All it takes is one break in the clouds, a quick turnaround, and suddenly the energy is back — crowd buzzing, players charged up, and the game alive again. That’s the beauty of cricket, isn’t it? Even the rain can’t dampen the anticipation for long.Hang in there — when play resumes, it’ll feel even bigger.”
7:42pm Well, the rain seems to have picked up ever so slightly in intensity.
Vishal Poojary: “Have heard of drizzle, but what is a mizzle?” — A very fine drizzle. But it seems to have become a proper drizzle since the usage of that word…
7:34pm Okay, enough of the to-and-fro. It seems like the rain has stopped now or even if it is raining, it is very light. Ground staff and fourth umpire on the field of play and no one has their umbrellas up. But the covers are not coming off as such, even though the super soppers are at work, which may be a sign that there is still a mizzle around.
7:28pm Well, scratch that previous update because it seems to still be drizzling. We have an hour or so before we start losing overs, so there is still a chance we get a full 40-over game.
7:25pm Looks like the rain has relented. The ground staff are hard at work, and the fourth umpire is taking stock of the situation and has his umbrella tucked by his side.
Vipin : “I am in Chicago – Weather forecast for Guwahati shows that rain should be ending very soon and no more rain in the forecast. Is that what you are seeing ?” — Very tough to figure out at night time. We can only hope the rain stops soon and that we get some cricket to watch.
saiful Islam: “It is still raining.” — Yes, it is, unfortunately.
7pm The Bumrah-Sooryavanshi match-up has dominated the discourse in the build-up to this game (when it has not been about rain), but there are several other key facets to keep an eye on, not least Hardik Pandya’s availability. Abhijato Sensarma sets the scene in his match preview.
kaig : “well at least the forecast is not as bad as it was yesterday!” — Small wins…
SS: “I took half day at office to watch this match. Please make it happen @espncricinfo. I need rain updates every minute.” — Only if we had that much power and sway…
6:46pm It is still raining steadily in Guwahati and the toss, to no one’s surprise, has officially been delayed.
Sai: “Well according to the forecast, the rain shouldn’t persist for long so we will definitely get a game here….But I didn’t say anything :)”
VS: “Why the rain has to come on match days? Are we going to miss/ delay Bumrah vs sooriyavanshi show. Much awaited contest” — There has long been a myth that if any region needs rain, it needs to organize a game of cricket. Not scientifically proven, though, it must be added. But too uncanny to be ignored either.
Shaurya : “Hope it rains all the way today…#AntiJinx!!” — Ah. The things sport makes you do…
6:32pm But before all of that, and in sticking with the theme for yesterday, it is currently damp in Guwahati. There had been a torrential outburst around 4:30pm. The rain then relented for a bit but has since returned. Ashish Pant is on the Live Report and that might be the place to catch up on the rain timeline so far.
Sowmya : “Sun sets way earlier in Guwahati than most Indian cities. With rain around , let us rule dew out but it is again a no discrete mathematics for the team winning the toss!” — Well, after yesterday, do not rule anything out at the toss…
Mustafa Moudi: “From 2020-21 Archer was Part of RR and Boult was with MI. In 2022 Mega-Auction, Both the sides swapped these Pacers as MI took Archer while RR got Boult. Again in 2025 Mega-Auction, MI got back Boult and RR bought Archer. Dont know what these 2 sides are doing with Archer and Boult !!” — Well, that just shows the value of top-quality new-ball pacers, who are regular wicket-takers.
6:30pm Nothing sets pulses racing in sport quite like youthful exuberance. The confidence to take on the game. The courage to play the game how you want to play it. And the absence of baggage – of days and nights that may otherwise scramble the mind.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, all of 15 years old, cares little for reputation. Or for anything really. But tonight, he might have to account for something and someone. A juggernaut the whole world often fails to thwart, and a force of nature the world cannot help but admire and gush over: Jasprit Bumrah.
And that, in a microcosm, personifies today’s clash. On the one side, the devil-may-care approach the Rajasthan Royals bring, and the sheer audacity associated to their style of cricket. Not quite backed up by a glut of trophies yet, but increasingly hungry for that haul. And then on the other, the Mumbai Indians. Winners more often than most. The franchise that has seen it all – the ups, the downs, the fightbacks – but for who a title has, perhaps unnervingly, remained elusive for more than half a decade.
Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo’s coverage. We are in the far east. Where the challenge of a five-time champion has already been convincingly doused this season, but where MI – having suffered their customary start-of-the-campaign defeat – arrive, itching to prove that they are, on paper and on the field, still the team to beat.
Lots to look forward to, so let’s get stuck in!
